Interview with Jason Sundstrom

Who are your influences past and present?

One of my biggest influences is the Flashbulb. The artists that usually influence me are the most are those who don't stick to a particular genre and show their diversity by creating new sub-genres. For example, drum n bass producer Spor makes sounds that are very intricate and WAY out there. He keeps the same element that other darkstep producers have but he stands out from the rest. His sound is unique and defined. Other influences: Moby, Gui Boratto, Thievery Corporation, Bright Eyes, Iron & Wine, Bassnectar, Radiohead, Hot Chip, Justice, and High Contrast.

How did you get into production?
I have always loved music. Growing up I had drug problems. I went to rehab at age 16. At the time I was heavily influenced by electronic music (trance, techno, and drum n bass). When I got sober I switched my addiction from drugs to making music. Been sober ever since.

What sort of hardware/software are you on?
I use cubase. I also use a lot of different vst instruments and plugins. My favorite vst is made by novation and its called v-station. I make a majority of my sounds on that synth. Other instruments I use are: Massive, Nexus, FM-8, Morphine, and absynth. For mastering plugins I use izotope and the waves plugins.

What prompted your move from drum and bass into this filthy thing we call electro?
When I was producing drum n bass I didn't know much about electro. The only artists I knew of were klass and micha moor. My friend introduced me to Justice and the Bloody Beetroots and from there I decided that I was going to be an electro producer.

What's next for you? Labels, tours, remixes, etc.
I am currently doing a track for Virginia Pizzi, an up and coming vocalist based in Miami right now. She has an album set to be released early next year and has included me in her project. Also, have an EP remix for my friend Ian Kronk aka The Black Dove Underground, check him out. Also, got a remix for a band, but can't say much right now about that, so you'll just have to wait and find out. I just recently finshed a remix for MC ENVY, she is a dubstep/electro/grime mc based out of London. I have a preview clip up on my myspace you can check out. Hopefully some collab work as well with some well known local electro artists from OC/LA. I am currently preparing myself to play out live in a club, using an evolution midi controller (Felix Cartal), and abbelton live. So expect live sets from me early next year, and of course the record label. I am currently unsigned right now, but have a beatport release coming out soon with a remix I did for a German Producer by the name of Future Flashs. The track is called "Get Down", you can check it out on my myspace as well. This will be my first beatport track, and I am very excited.

What's your take on electro's influence over pop music?
I think that a lot of the mainstream pop music is definitely heavily influenced from electro. Lady Gaga is a prime example. Britney Spears also has electro influence.

Robots: Friend or Foe?
Foe. We are Programmed. Be Aware. The Chip is Coming. www.thechipiscoming.com
